The Ramblings of a Professional Coach

Here I am just at the stage of qualifying for my diplomas in, Personal Performance Coaching and Corporate and Executive Coaching, and I am prepping my marketing now, to open my new business.

Guess what?

We are in recession!

There are many things in life that can stop you from believing in yourself, and they say there is no good time to start a business of self employment, never the less I am going to do it!

I am going to be very aware that there are a few things I can look out for on my journey forward!

Getting Rid of Limiting Beliefs: The human being has a great knack of self sabotage! It has a whole cast of gremlins that will limit you if you are not aware of them!
I am fully aware of my gremlins, the one that says, “You’re bound to do it wrong! You know how impossible it is for you normally, never mind in a recession!”
Sound familiar? Well, I know that if I believe I can do it – I will do it. I have put into place all the things I need to stay focussed on this!

Clear Vision and Direction: I have invested heavily in planning my journey, just as you would if you were going on a long distance trip away. I have a clear outlook on who I will contact, how and why. I have a swot analysis and methods in-case things do not quite go according to plan. I started at the end and worked my way back, setting myself targets along the way.

I am afraid of the Unknown.

You know, I put on the TV and listen to the Radio and I wonder why? If I did not know all this doom and gloom, would I do things in a different way?

I have come to the conclusion that, I am not the only person suffering from the recession; therefore everybody is affected by it! If I start my business with this knowledge I have no excuse! How can I fail? I will sell myself at the price I am worth and explain my discount plan owing to the recession! Just like everybody else! Let’s face it, who doesn’t need coaching right now? “Show me the woman with the torch for God sakes – and let’s get out of this mess!” I hear them all cry!

“Prophet Syndrome” and Belief:

It takes little effort to say you believe in something, it is actually in the doing of that something, and being able to put your life on it, that belief is all about!

I BELIEVE!

There are some that will not believe, and they will be some of my closest friends and family! I call this “prophet syndrome.” There will be followers, and there will be those who will curse you and bicker and heckle you!  Sounds quite scary really doesn’t it?

Well be prepared, as your nearest and dearest become Harry Endfield’s wonderful character that said, “You don’t want to do that! Not now, in this current climate! No, it will be a disaster! You can’t do that!”

Sound familiar?

Now don’t get me wrong feed- back is very important to a coach, in fact it changes everything, (Johari’s window for e.g.)however, if the feed-back is increasing your limiting beliefs then, believe me change your position. It is often best NOT to discuss your business plan with family and friends, only your successes!

Remember do not “fall out” with family, “fall out” of the way of their negativity instead. Find people like you, that are in a positive state and you can remain focussed together and will contribute positively to your business plan.

Now I am cooking! Can you see? What could possibly go wrong now?

Here it comes…………………………….

What if I am successful?

Oh yes, the big nasty self sabotaging gremlin herself has saved herself for last!

OK, so getting in front of my first client is scary, I have practiced in front of the mirror umpteen times now. If I am really honest, it’s the fear of shaking and the client, seeing it, and it’s the sweaty thing, you know what I mean without further embarrassment?

Does this sound familiar?

Once the first one is out of the way, it is surprising how big nasty self sabotaging gremlin comes up with cunning plan number two. Are you ready for this one?

What happens if you get so much work you can’t fit it all in?
You neglect your duty as a mum and wife.
You become a machine recognising only fame!
You are afraid of paying too much tax in your first year!!
Ok , the last one was a bit ridiculous !

Be ready, you must be able to chose your course. You must set your targets and know your limits. Work out how much time you are going to spend earning your money, and how much time you want to spend your time reaping the rewards of hard work with your family and friends. ( if you still want them that is – just kidding!)

I am going to follow my dreams and pathway. “Follow the yellow brick road” like in the film, “The Wizard of Oz”, you will be surprised what you already know. And you will be surprised what you can already achieve on your own, when you believe!

Right on Amanda!!! You are my kind of Girl! Go with the wind, whether it is small or great. It will gather momentum.

I am also doing the Corporate course and personal performance. got a bit distracted in order to get an income to start the business when I complete.

You have encouraged me. Actually, in this recession, I think now is the time to be opimistic and positive or we’ll spend too long in the doldrums. the turning is in view I believe.

You go for it girl. Keep focussed and you WILL succeed. Remember they are looking to you for what you will do for them not looking at you shaking.

All the best

Amanda,

I have just made the big and brave decision of signing on the dotted line and training to be a life coach. I have just read your article and again feel really inspired that I have so made the right decision!

I am a (now unemployed!) mother of two young children and I was wondering if being a life coach would get in the way of being there for them – but you are right – this is really the best of both worlds.

I wish you all the very best in your venture and I know you are a success.
