How Do I Launch A Coaching Business In An Unknown Market?

Dear Lambert,

You ask a very good question:

‘How can I  start a coaching Business here in Yaounde Cameroon when very little about coaching is known?’

Though ‘Ask Bev’ I aim to answer questions based upon my experience in setting up a coaching business and I also welcome comments from coaches who would like to offer additional comments from their own tried and tested methods.

Firstly I would like to say how wonderfully flexible coaching is as a business. When I set up as a coach in my home town Bristol I rented an office so I could meet my clients face to face.

I soon realised that with the worldwide web my business was not focused on local clients in a 5 mile radius it meant I could be coaching people from all over the world. In reality I found that many of my clients came from the UK with the exception of a few in Europe.
As technology advances coaches have many methods at their disposal, Skype call, FaceTime and generally low priced telephone calls. I actually found that even my local clients chose to opt for telephone coaching as they could save time travelling to and from the office.

My advice is to focus on your niche and identify your target market, find out where they are and what forums they use and start to connect with them. Aim to be an expert in your field by writing articles and blogs. Here’s a test that every coach should do right now, type you name into google and see what appears.

The goal is to have pages of links, blogs and articles all demonstrating your expertise as a coach in that area. The goals isn’t for you to have to find clients its about getting well known in your niche so people seek you. Remember ‘generalists seek clients, clients seek specialists’.

In order to be successful outside of your area you need to embrace all options available to you. Social Media is still not widely used by coaches which is a pity as this is a great platform to build your personal brand and gain attention. We will cover this in more detail in a future ‘Ask Bev’ discussion.

The bottom line is that location doesn’t have to hinder you if you use technology and make the most of the internet and social media to become a highly sought after expert in your coaching niche

I wish you well,
