Coach In The Spotlight - Andrew Pain

I considered a career in coaching because my international headhunting practice, which I had run for 5 years was slowing down in the recession. Alongside this I had just completed a divorce so all round, I was thirsting for a change of direction.

I actually trained as a coach because I was keen to specialise in the area of weight loss as I’m very passionate about health, fitness, and helping people to lose weight in a dignified way.

I pursued my foundation coaching training through another coaching school before signing up to the Coaching Academy’s Youth Impact Coaching Diploma, a fantastic course, utilising the skills of some of the countries best trainers and giving participants an excellent source of material for both work with youth and also adults.

In comparison with my first coaching school with whom I completed my foundation training, the Coaching Academy is far ahead in terms of the quality of its course, its material and the people it uses to deliver its course and I have since recommended The Coaching Academy as THE coaching school to use, both to friends and acquaintances who are interested in coaching.

Since starting my journey in coaching, I have rebuilt my confidence, self belief and optimism which were badly damaged as a result of my divorce and the slow down of my headhunting business, and perhaps even more importantly, for my two daughters aged 9 and 6, I have become a much better father since training to be a coach!

Whilst I felt very sure that I would specialise in the area of weight loss, my business has actually opened out in several directions:

  • I now have a growing workload with individuals and small businesses in the Midlands dealing with a variety of topics including self-esteem, career development, business development, leadership, relationships and weight loss.
  • I have designed my own weight loss programme (A.C.E) which is being trialled by the Weight Management Team at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, the largest NHS weight management team in the UK.
  • I have designed my own employability programme called Snakes and Ladders, which I’ve started delivering to schools and colleges.
  • I have just finished writing a programme on discovering and pursuing dreams and have received interest from one of the UK’s major banks and one of the UK’s leading car manufacturers.

Developing a career in coaching in the current economic climate has been a very tough journey.

The best advice I could give to new trainees is to be prepared for a long period of high quality marketing if they want to succeed in building a viable coaching business. They will need to show as much initiative, innovation and creativity in their marketing, as they do when they are in session with their clients.

I’ve met some excellent coaches on the networking scenes in Birmingham, but the ones who really succeed are those who are also passionate, pro active and talented when it comes to marketing themselves.
