Coach In The Spotlight - Laraine Burnett

I am a serving police officer. My career path has focused on training. Initially, this was the training of police recruits and, more recently, the delivery of a leadership/self development course to police personnel.

About ten years ago, I was introduced to NLP and completed a Practitioner course. I was in the fortunate position to be able to practice my newfound skills on my police recruits who were all willing volunteers. I found the techniques particularly useful in helping students deal with nerves on exam days, to increase their confidence and overcome limiting beliefs.

I continued my study of NLP, becoming a qualified Hypnotherapist, Master NLP Practitioner and Certified Trainer of NLP.

I heard about The Coaching Academy’s 2-day certificate course in 2008. It sounded relevant to my role as a personal development trainer. I have a thirst for learning new skills and techniques that I can share with others and so I lapped up the content of this course.

Afterwards, I mulled over the prospect of signing up to The Coaching Academy. Becoming a protégé really appealed to me. I knew that it would compliment my existing skills and would be an invaluable asset. I liked the idea of becoming a life coach on leaving the police service and so, after just one very sleepless night, I made a decision to just go for it. I remember thinking about a quote that I often use with my students; “To get what you have never had, you must do what you have never done.”

I was excited to receive the course material and really keen to be a student again. I immediately started studying for the Personal Performance Diploma and began to collect my practice clients. This was for me the most rewarding part of the diploma – to actually be coaching real people and seeing the effects of the new techniques I was learning. I was encouraged to come out of my comfort zone and to coach people over the phone – I didn’t believe this was possible until then.

I found the GROW model fascinating and so effective. I was rewarded by seeing people’s progress and often got off the phone on a real “high” when someone had moved forward towards their goal. The more coaching I did, the more I gained in confidence and in the belief that I could actually be good at this and that it really could be a second career for me.

The models and new concepts that I was learning so complimented the personal development course that I deliver. I was now able to really talk about coaching from a place of knowledge and experience. As I developed in confidence I looked for any opportunity to demonstrate coaching within the classroom. Coaching was gradually becoming a very natural part of my life and it felt good.

I continued working on each diploma (Corporate and Executive, Small Business and Youth) and very proudly completed them all within 18 months, obtaining a Distinction in each of them. By now I was beginning to charge for my coaching sessions and had one or two regular paying clients.

I enjoy using the Advanced Diploma days as my continual professional development. I have also just started receiving coaching myself from Pam Lidford. These sessions have been invaluable and have advanced me even further in my development and confidence as a coach.

I have chosen Confidence Coaching as my niche. This is because I seem to naturally attract people who want to increase their self-esteem and confidence. Confidence affects every part of our lives whether it is attending an interview, public speaking, sport performance, exams, dating or whatever. I enjoy helping people to find that inner strength and self-worth and to see them move out of their comfort zone.

I am now attracting more and more clients. I coach within the classroom, both individuals and as a group and am amazed sometimes at the very obvious positive changes that take place with people before my very eyes. I love the fact that coaching is so simple and yet so wonderfully effective. Using it in partnership with my existing NLP skills has been very powerful.

I will be leaving the police service in the next two and half years and this is when I will be coaching full time. I have already adopted the identity of a coach and am so excited about fully immersing myself in this second career. Coaching has changed my life and it found me at the perfect time; naturally fitting into my life-style and personality.

I am proud to be a part of The Coaching Academy and have a long-term goal of becoming a trainer for them myself one day.

Thank you for sharing your journey with us Laraine – there is so much positive energy in your writing and it is encouraging us all to reach and stretch and to not be, so amazed by what is attainable, in due time.
The quote that you shared brought another insight and inspiration.
I’m sure you will eventually be training new students in the Academy and that will be an excellent bonus for everyone involved.
Wishing you every success as you go from strength to strength and enjoy every minute!
