Coach In The Spotlight - Veronica Broomes

Veronica Broomes qualified through The Coaching Academy and has enthusiastically agreed to share her coaching experience, so we have put her in the Coaching Hot Seat. Here is Veronica’s story:-

What brought you to coaching?

Towards the end of 2008, I was considering how to deliver more effective and longer-term change and transformation in organisations, especially among managers and leaders in business. Specifically, I wanted solutions that provided more value-added and simultaneously built longer-term relationships with clients

Although I knew about life coaching, I did not see that as the solution, as I was interested in coaching for businesses. It was then that I came across The Coaching Academy free coaching weekends in London and attended one in May 2009. The Coaching Academy’s business-related coaching programmes appealed to me and I enrolled on the Small Business and Corporate and Executive Coaching programmes.

What were your original thoughts for applying the coaching?

I saw my coaching skills as affording value-added solutions for smaller businesses. In addition, I saw how I could use coaching with senior managers in larger organisations –primarily Higher Education institutions and global businesses.

What was your profession before becoming a coach?

I worked in learning and development, having founded a training business in 2004. The business offered a range of customised courses in personal development, leadership and management skills. Prior to that, I had worked in scientific research and consultancies on environment and business sustainability. Because of an interest in communication skills, I had also pursued the Toastmasters International communication skills programmes and is a qualified Advanced Toastmaster.

What did you find most interesting to learn?

Most interesting was using coaching tools used during Accelerator Days. It became even more satisfying to develop tools of my own for work with clients.

What was the most rewarding part of the training/journey?

Very rewarding was the practical assessments and feedback from these (from both Assessor and Clients). These helped in refining and developing my coaching style. Also rewarding was the process for development and compilation of two case studies on how clients benefited from business coaching.

Which bits did you enjoy the most?

Sessions on leadership and managing teams were very dynamic and informative. These revealed a myriad of ways in which coaching could provide huge benefits to individuals and organisations –both large and small.

How did the qualification slot in with your current life?

The Small Business and Corporate and Executive coaching diplomas are ideal fits for services offered by my training company. From a personal perspective, I am keen to develop a larger base of clients for telephone coaching. This would allow me to support even more individuals and organisations in any given time-frame. Of course, face to face delivery is an option, but with more flexibility in when and how this is done. The qualifications also provide me with a greater level of confidence about the value I can provide when engaging with discussions with potential clients. As one Coaching Academy trainer often suggested – coach the brief (for the assignment).

What else did you have to consider whilst qualifying?

Because I was still working in my training business whilst qualifying, I had to focus on delivering training, securing new work. The latter involved attending many networking events, setting up client meetings and even writing bids for new projects

Where are you now? How are you using your coaching skills?

I am focusing on client acquisition and development of coaching tools to support small businesses and managers in larger organisations. I am using my coaching skills with individual clients with business backgrounds.

What is your coaching niche and why did you choose it?

Specific areas of focus are Small Business and Corporate and Executive Coaching.

  • I have developed to support business growth in SMEs. Complementary to this is a service to enable small businesses use webinars, including automated ones, to educate existing and potential customers about their services or products.
  • In my training role, I find that confidence building continues to be a challenge for many. In the workplace, this can lead to feelings of insecurity, triggering team conflict and tensions. For this, I launched two solutions –a Confidence Building toolkit and a six-module programme to empower managers and senior executives.

What is the best thing that could happen to your coaching business in the next 2 years?

Expansion of business and executive coaching services to include senior managers and directors. Working with more clients in the UK and globally, through individual and group coaching, both virtual and face to face.

What is your favorite coaching question?

It’s not easy to select one, so here are two of my favourite:

  • What can you do to have a different outcome next time around?
  • What’s another way to interpret that?

What do you enjoy most about being a coach?

  • Being able to expand horizons/thinking across a broader range of options by clients.
  • Learning about clients’ successes, especially when these are way beyond agreed actions and original goals.

People who are looking at coaching?

Coaching is effective in creating the space and finding time required to focus on future actions to achieve specific goals as part of a longer-term vision. Coaching gives freedom to explore a range of options and to make rapid progress in completing actions.

Consider how much more you are likely to achieve from having a trusted and confidential guide (at your side) supporting you to get clarity about what you want to achieve in a given time-frame and the freedom to choose the best options.

Those coaches currently in training?

Maximise the time you invest in Accelerator Days! Much learning will take place in developing both coaching style and reinforcing confidence to work with a range of ‘real life’ coaching clients.

Coaches that are about to qualify?

If you are not already doing so, sign up to at least two online coaching groups/ forums. Read posts, ask questions or respond to posts from others.

People that are in a similar situation to yourself?

Have a Coach or Mentor of your own (preferably paid) to help you focus, build your coaching and business skills. Also, be open to collaboration with others.

Jonathan, thank you for your kind remarks.

It is helpful to know that my message has connected with you. No doubt, there are many other coaches who can share similar journeys also and be an inspiration to others.

About getting a mentor, I would say you need to decide when to begin and what will be the focus of your work with your mentor. That way, you get the best from the mentoring relationship.

If I can be of assistance, please feel free to get in touch.

Best wishes.
