Top 10 Coaching Questions

As a professional coach, have you ever heard people say: “I would love to be a coach but I don’t think I would have the right questions to ask a client”.

It seems that it’s a shame that such a limiting belief can potentially hold great coaches back so…

Armed with this knowledge and determined to help those who have a desire to help others, here are a set of top 10 coaching questions:

  1. 1. What will be the impact if things stayed the same?
  2. 2. How will you know…?
  3. 3. What do you mean when you say [X] ? i.e.: What do you mean when you say ‘success’?
  4. 4. What practical actions do you want to take over the next 7 days?
  5. 5. What else?
  6. 6. How important is this to you?
  7. 7. What if you could wave a magic wand – what would you do?
  8. 8. Where will this lead?
  9. 9. What would your best friend tell you to do?
  10. 10. What have you done before that has helped with this issue?

Coaching is all about asking the right questions, so explore and experiment withthe top 10 and make them your own.

You will soon see the veil of uncertainty lift and your confidence grow until you suddenly realise that you are no longer reading a script and have the right question for the right person, at the right time.

Please feel free to share your favourite questions, and together we can conquer these limiting beliefs.

Great questions, Coaching Academy.. these must be complemented by as great active listening skills to ensure the learning is complete. It’s no good asking great questions if you’re not prepared to listen, and I mean really listen to the answers. I read somewhere the other day that a conversation is NOT just waiting for your turn to speak. Listening as always, Barry

What is the one basic premise/principle upon which all questioning is based?

Good quality list of questions that go beyond the day-to-day ‘surface structure and will always provoke further questions from the ‘deep structure’ responses from the coachee.

Really like the above questions, but would like to add another.
In a conversation at a conference in Glamorgan i was given what has proved to be a very powerful question, in the right place, and it is
‘so what are you going to do?’
with the emphasis on the what and the you
this throws it right back to them – especially if they have been on a blame trail.
And then yes – you just wait, often a while, and then listen.
